I suppose it was mid to late eighties when I first became conscious of 'the scene' as we know it. Friends of mine, a.k.a. 'The kickin club' were putting on raves, house parties and other such events. We supported them, fascinated by the first, we now had a taste and needed more!
It probably wasn't until about a year or so later when I started to look below the surface to see how it all worked; the production of parties, the music, the dj's- the whole spectrum. By this stage I was heavily hooked into the pirate stations, such as pulse, kiss, energy, sunrise, defection, don then later, weekend rush and kool fm. Listening to the music and educating myself about this 'rave scene' thing.collecting flyers, making tapes, swapping and selling them, raving it out.you know how it goes. Hypnotism!
Back then, we were all kinda young but knew what we wanted and that was to go forward, never really content with what was being given to us the public, I wanted to inform myself about what was going on before it came to the attention thereof.
For some reason, I was always interested in the music side of things which helped a lot as the people around me at the time seemed to be in it for more recreational purposes. I wanted to know about this tune and that tune, some didn't.
By this stage, the tunes in my bedroom were escalating and I had some decks to suit. 'The art of mixing was there' said my mentor. Dj highpoint (nw10). 'A natural', this inspired me a great deal, which led me to go in!
Always looking for something different, this was it for me.the music, large amounts of people descending for the same reason, you could feel this shit, If you were there you would know - Rage, Storm (Hastings pier), Spiral Tribe, A.W.O.L. (Paradise club, SW1), Exodus, Roller Express, Lazerdrome, Voodoo Magic (equinox), Telepathy, Roast, Thunder and Joy, Jungle Fever, the list could go on and on.
On my work experience in Oxford Street one day, I decided to venture down to black market records, to check it all out. This is where I met Nicky, later I met Ray Keith and Ash-a-Tak (whom along with other key individuals we later established 'life music management', incorporating 'life records' and 'elite recordings' )
Dj'ing evolved under the names of Stoney, Paris and now sub. Playing on many pirate stations such as Boss FM, Shokin FM, Up- Front and Errupton amongst others before landing a residency on Kool Fm, back in 97' (Now featuring Saturday afternoons from 3-5 PM). I also feature monthly on www.pyrotechnicradio.com
I have had various bookings including playing out at places like The Marquee Club, EC1 Club, Equinox, Roller Express, Stratford rex, Atomics, Bagley's, The Astoria, The Ministry Of Sound and also international and European dates including bookings in America, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Holland, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
As time goes by you move up a step and start thinking about those tunes, so being the person I am, that's what I did.(well no one wants to stay in the same place for ever.do they?). After receiving a qualification in sound engineering and a vast knowledge along the way I have recently established my own company, ibs muzik.
